Quick Tips to Get Organized and Grow Your Email List

Are you feeling overwhelmed or frustrated with the thought of growing your email list? Does it seem like an impossible task?

Growing your email list takes time, patience, and focus on your email marketing strategy. The good news is you can avoid feeling frustrated by taking the time to get organized up front.

“For every minute spent organizing, an hour is earned.” - Benjamin Franklin

Getting and staying organized can be difficult when you have a long list of tasks to complete every day and building your email list is just one of them.

By creating a well thought out strategy and utilizing technology, you can get organized without frustration and overwhelm. When you get organized, you'll have an engaging email list and happy customers.

Tip 1. Block out time to strategize

To grow your email list, you need to reach the right audience and nurture the relationship by having conversations that help them grow. You can do this by creating a strategy that delivers the right message to the right people at the right time.

When you take the time to plan, you are more likely to see positive interaction, increased sales and improved relationships with your ideal customers. If you are strategic with your email marketing, subscribers will less likely unsubscribe because you are sending the thoughtful content they expected when they signed up for your list.

Block out time on your calendar to strategize when you feel most creative. If you're a morning person, your mind might feel clearest in the morning. Maybe you do your best thinking in the afternoon after you've had some time to warm up. You may be a night owl, who is sharpest during the evening hours. Whichever works best for you, block out the time accordingly and make it a priority. Think of it as a meeting with yourself and don't skip out on it.

Tip 2. Set up your technology

It can be overwhelming trying to decide what email marketing platform to use. There are tons of them out there that offer similar and different features in their own way.

Don't spend too much time worrying about which platform to choose just pick one and start. Most platforms offer the ability to export contacts should you decide to change later.

The best way to get started with technology is to jump right in. Review any getting started materials the platform offers. Try to add yourself to a list you create, make an opt-in form or create an email template. If you get stuck, most email marketing platforms offer help via tech support or live chat. Some email marketing platforms offer tutorials to help you get comfortable with the technology.

Some other tips to get organized:

Create an idea log to keep track of any new ideas you have. I utilize the cloud-based app, Evernote to capture ideas on the go, but I also have a paper notebook on my desk. It doesn’t matter what you use just be consistent in capturing those ideas.

Our customers are unique individuals, so divide your email subscribers into segments and tailor your message for each list.

Use an editorial calendar to plan what topics you’ll cover and when you're going to send your email campaigns.

Settings aside time at the start to get organized will save you time in the long run. When you organize your email marketing efforts, you will have a more engaged list with less unsubscribes, which in turn leads to a growing list of email subscribers to grow your business.
